The question usually appears at the wrong time. You pick up a pen, see ink on the nib, and cannot remember whether it is a waterproof black, an iron gall blue, or the sample you meant to finish last week. A notebook margin may hold one note, a swatch card may hold another, and a spreadsheet may be out of date. When the record is split across places, buying another bottle you already own becomes easier than checking what is on the shelf.
A good currently inked tracker should stay plain. It needs the pen, the loaded ink, and a quick way to change that pairing after a cleanout or refill. Extra columns can help in a broad collection spreadsheet, but the daily question is narrower: what can I write with today, and what ink is already in it?
Attach the ink to that pen
Record the bottle, cartridge, or manual ink note right beside the pen, not in a separate memory trail.
Clear it when the pen is empty
When you clean or rotate the pen, remove the ink status so yesterday’s setup does not become today’s mistake.
