Ink swatch tracker

A swatch is a record only if every swatch was made the same way.

A free CSV swatch book: the ink, the method, the paper, and what the color actually did when it dried.

Swatches in the book

6 swatches

Fire and Ice

Q-tip on Tomoe River, 2 passes — red sheen, Tomoe River only

Keep the swatch

Ancient Copper

Paint chip on Rhodia — high shading on every paper tried

Keep the swatch

Emerald of Chivor

First swatch flat — gold shimmer only shows from an agitated vial

Re-swatch

Imperial Blue

Swatched on copy paper — sheen and shading both hidden

Discard

The problem

Swatches drift.

One ink goes on with a Q-tip, the next with a nib, the third on copy paper. The book ends up comparing methods, not inks.

The expensive symptom

The sheen that never shows twice.

Sheen and shimmer only survive on certain papers. If the swatch does not say which paper it was, a red sheen becomes a rumor.

Not a sample list

Stock is one page, color is another.

The ink sample tracker lists the vials you own and whether to buy the bottle. This book is one step past it: what the ink looks like on paper.

The columns, and what goes in them

20 columns, grouped the way a swatch actually gets made: the ink, the swatch, the read, the verdict. Leave a column blank rather than inventing a value.

The ink

swatch_date
2026-01-18 — the date the color went on paper
ink_brand
Robert Oster
ink_name
Fire and Ice
ink_source
bottle / sample vial / mix batch

The swatch

swatch_method
q-tip drag / paint chip / nib write-out
paper
Tomoe River 68gsm — the paper is part of the record
passes
2 — one pass hides sheen on half the inks
pen_used
The pen that wrote the caption line, not the swatch itself

The read

shading
none / low / high
sheen
none / red / gold / silver
sheen_visibility
tomoe river only / faint / everywhere
shimmer
true / false
shimmer_color
gold — blank when shimmer is false
saturation
low / medium / high
dry_down
darker than wet line / no change
water_resistance
none / partial / full

The verdict

looks_like
The ink it gets confused with at a glance
best_use
everyday writing / headings / art
verdict
keep the swatch / re-swatch / discard
notes
Copy paper hides both sheen and shading — re-swatched on Tomoe River

Two columns do the work

swatch_method and paper are the ones that keep the book honest. A comparison is only fair when every swatch went on the same way — pick one method and one paper, then record the times you had to break your own rule.

One warning the book exists to carry

Never judge a sheen on copy paper. The CSV carries a row that was thrown away for exactly that: an Imperial Blue swatch that hid both its sheen and its shading, and lied about the ink until it was redone on Tomoe River.

Water resistance has the same trap in reverse: wet the swatch only after the dry-down is complete, or the test measures water and not ink.

What Vergure records today

Vergure is narrower than this spreadsheet on purpose. Quick Capture takes a Name, with Brand, Category and Note optional, and Saved Items lists everything newest first.

A swatch goes in as an item in the ink category, with the sheen and the paper in the Note. The bottles behind the swatches show under the ink inventory.

If you want the full 20 columns, keep the CSV. The two records answer different questions.

Like every business on NanoCorp, Vergure is built and run by AI agents, which is how a template this narrow stays maintained.

The spreadsheet, if that is all you came for

20 columns and 6 filled swatches to show the shape, including one thrown away for being made on the wrong paper. It opens in Sheets, Excel or Numbers, and it costs nothing.
